Everyone takes out their <strong>white shirt or T-shirt<\/strong>, <strong>their blue <\/strong>denim jeans or <strong>skirt, <\/strong>and of course the<strong>blue checked neckerchief<\/strong>, which patiently waits tied around the wrist or waist until the moment of the <em><strong>txupinazo<\/strong><\/em>, when it is finally placed around the neck. From early in the morning, groups of friends take over the streets with contagious energy, and in the afternoon, if you want to listen to the <strong><em>Salve<\/em> in the church of Andra Mari<\/strong>, you\u2019d better be on time! Otherwise, there\u2019s no room left\u2014and believe me, it\u2019s worth it. When leaving the church, <strong>the opening speech<\/strong> is heard from the balcony of the Pasealeku, and when the rocket finally explodes in the sky, the crowd transforms and erupts in a joyful shout that sweeps us along in a chain through Adolfo Urioste Street. The hangover from the previous day is noticeable, but little by little people get going and, by midday, the streets are bustling again. The <em><strong>goitibehera<\/strong><\/em> <strong>championship<\/strong> is the highlight of the day: these homemade, motor-free vehicles race downhill at full speed from Lumo to Media Calle. Laughter and cheers echo throughout the town as the drivers try to keep their balance on every curve, some wearing costumes as extravagant as they are amusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1920 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1920\" controls src=\"https:\/\/gernikainfo.eus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Goitibehera6.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-theme-primary-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f8fb2f8e17ded975964b5ab474ea22b4\" id=\"roke\"><strong>August 16: San Roke Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>August 16, <strong>San Roke<\/strong>, is the big day. From early on, the air is filled with the aroma of <strong><em>sukalki<\/em>,<\/strong> a traditional stew that groups of friends prepare with great care right on the street. Pots bubble away while the cooks patiently watch the fire, sharing <strong><em>txakoli<\/em>, pintxos<\/strong>, and improvised songs. But it\u2019s not all about food: the <strong><em>Gernika garrafa<\/em> <\/strong>also takes center stage. This \u201cstrong\u201d concoction is handed out in the Pasealeku along with a <em>txistorra<\/em> pintxo\u2014so your stomach doesn\u2019t suffer too much! Although many are still recovering from the previous day, the afternoon fills with superheroes, fairy-tale characters, and wonderfully creative costumes. Creativity knows no limits, and every year brings new surprises that make us laugh out loud\u2014especially the little ones. Groups challenge each other with games, absurd races, and improvised competitions that make this one of the most carefree and joyful days. It\u2019s a quieter day, dedicated <strong>to older people and children<\/strong>, as a tribute to those who have always lived the festivities and to those who are just discovering them. It\u2019s also a day of farewells, of getting your voice back, and of recalling anecdotes with laughter. The name comes from the Basque words <em>\u201cgoitik behera\u201d<\/em>, meaning \u201cfrom top to bottom.\u201d Each participant builds their vehicle at home or by hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GARGANT\u00daA<\/strong>: a giant, caricatured figure often featured in festivals.
