San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
A magical place you simply can’t miss

The hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe belongs to the municipality of Bermeo. Perched on top of a rocky outcrop, it is linked to the peninsula by a marvellous little bridge that leads to the 241 steps you need to climb to get to the hermitage. This natural environment, declared a Biotope Protection Area, has become extremely popular thanks to its starring role as “Dragonstone” in the seventh season of Game of Thrones.
How long does it take to get to the hermitage?
The descent starts in Urizarreta, just beside the Eneperi restaurant. Once you have passed the control point, a 1,200 metre path stretches out in front of you: it has a gradient of 35% and the ground is rather uneven, so you’d be well recommended to wear comfortable clothes and footwear. It will take you about 45 minutes to reach the hermitage.
The way back, which takes you through Ermu, is along a 1,600 metre path with a 15% gradient.
There and back, your visit will take approximately two and a half hours.
